JRTS was founded in 2006 by three ladies, Kaitlin, Melissa and Michelle. During this time there was no support group in Richmond Va. In August of 2006 JRTS had there first meeting with about 19 people in attendance. Since then JRTS has had monthly meetings and grown to about 30+ members that attend meetings. Our online base is about 100+. We have guest speakers who attend our meetings and speak on all types of issues that surround being Transgender. Dr. Christine McGinn has spoken several times to the group. Other speakers consist of doctors, lawyers, therapist, hair removal specialist, and even other groups throughout the state.
When JRTS was founded we decided that we were going to put the support in support group by not being a group that meets once a month and then doesn't communicate till the next meeting a month later. We are a family and communicate like one by keeping in touch with one another, going on outings together, getting together and going out to eat and socialize. We have had a very high successful rate of our members reaching goals they set for themselves.
So where are the founders of JRTS today? Kaitlin has moved to California, she has written a book called "Bondage of Self". Michelle has moved to Williamsburg, VA and she has started another group called Coalition For Transgender Rights In Virginia (CTRV). Melissa continues to be a leader of JRTS and with the help of two new leaders, Bethany and Keri, they run JRTS, planning the meetings and outreach throughout the community.
JRTS will continue to grow and help those seeking support where they need it. JRTS is always looking for new leaders to join these three women to continue what the founders started.
